As Medicare agents prepare for the 2027 plan year, one resource belongs in every agent’s client-education toolkit: the Medicare & You 2027 handbook.

Published by the federal government, Medicare & You is the official Medicare handbook and provides beneficiaries with straightforward information about Medicare benefits, coverage options, rights, protections, costs, and other frequently asked questions.

For agents, it can also be a valuable resource to share with clients before and during Medicare conversations.

What’s Inside the 2027 Medicare & You Handbook?

The 128-page handbook provides an overview of the Medicare program, including:

  • How Medicare works and the different parts of Medicare
  • Original Medicare
  • Medicare Advantage plans
  • Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)
  • Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D)
  • Programs that may help beneficiaries with Medicare costs
  • Medicare rights and protections
  • Helpful Medicare contacts and definitions

It also includes a side-by-side overview of Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage to help beneficiaries better understand how their coverage choices differ.

The 2027 edition highlights several new or updated Medicare topics, including changes involving Medicare.gov account access and identity verification, Medicare initiatives and care models, fraud prevention, eligibility requirements, rural health initiatives, and telehealth. The handbook states that certain Medicare telehealth flexibilities have been extended through December 31, 2027.

Why Agents Should Share It With Clients

Medicare can be overwhelming. Even experienced beneficiaries may have questions about the differences between Medicare Parts A, B, C and D, what Original Medicare covers, how Medicare Advantage works, or where Medigap fits into the picture.

Providing clients with an official Medicare resource gives them another trusted reference they can review on their own time.

It can also complement the work you already do as their agent. Rather than trying to explain every aspect of Medicare during a single appointment, you can point clients to the appropriate sections of the handbook and then help them apply that information to their individual situation.

That creates a better educational experience while reinforcing your role as a knowledgeable resource.

A Great Resource to Send Before an Appointment

Consider including the handbook in your pre-appointment communications.

A simple message such as, “Here is Medicare’s official 2027 handbook. You don’t need to read the entire document, but it’s a helpful resource to keep available if you have questions about Medicare,” can provide clients with useful background before you meet.

You can also reference specific sections during your conversations when questions arise.

Remember, Medicare & You provides general Medicare information. Clients should still review their plan-specific materials, including applicable Evidence of Coverage, Annual Notice of Change, Summary of Benefits, formularies, provider directories and other carrier documents when evaluating their coverage.

Keep Your Clients Informed

Great Medicare agents do more than help clients enroll in coverage. They help clients understand Medicare, stay informed about changes, and know where to turn when they have questions.

Sharing trusted resources such as the 2027 Medicare & You handbook is a simple way to provide additional value and stay connected with your clients throughout the year.

Download it, save it to your client resource library, and share it with your Medicare clients as you prepare for 2027.
